US-China Tensions Rise, Purbaya Says Indonesia Could Benefit
October 14, 2025 • Ben Asmadeus

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa responded to the renewed tension between the United States and China on Tuesday, 14 October 2025. The United States plans to impose a 100 % import tariff on all goods from China. The remarks were made in Jakarta.
Purbaya said the high tariff creates an opportunity for Indonesian-made products to compete in the U.S. market. He noted that an additional 30 % duty could raise the total tariff to 130 % after existing duties.
The minister pledged to review the tariff’s effect on the IDX composite and assess whether negative sentiment from China’s stock market could spill over to Indonesia. A positive investor sentiment could lift the IDX as Indonesian exports grow. This development matters for domestic businesses and the capital market.
