Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto praised Lotte Chemical Indonesia's Rp62 trillion investment to build a petrochemical complex in Cilegon, Banten. The New Ethylene Project (LINE) is in its final construction phase and is slated to start commercial operations in mid‑Q4 2025. Hartarto met with Lotte Chemical CEO Young Jun Lee on 30 October 2025 ahead of the APEC summit.
The Rp62 trillion investment, equivalent to about US$3.9 billion, includes a large‑scale ethylene and downstream products facility for Southeast Asia. The project is part of Indonesia‑Korea economic cooperation aimed at reducing reliance on imported chemical feedstocks and creating jobs. Funding support involves the sovereign wealth fund Danantara acting as a strategic financing facilitator.
When operational, the plant is expected to lower domestic chemical production costs, helping stabilize downstream product prices for consumers. Output will serve both the local market and export destinations, improving the national trade balance. The government views the project as a step toward a sustainable, high‑technology industrial transformation.
