MUI’s 11th Assembly to Discuss Tax Justice and Impact

Jakarta, 5 November 2025 – The 11th National Assembly of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) will discuss tax justice. The session, chaired by information and communication chief Masduki Baidlowi, will be held in Jakarta.
Masduki highlighted that tax justice is linked to Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution, which mandates a family‑based (kekeluargaan) economic system. Fatwa chief Asrorun Ni’am Sholeh noted growing public complaints about regional tax policies, especially the rise in Property Tax Base (NJOP) used to boost Local Original Revenue (PAD). In some regions, NJOP has increased up to fivefold, creating a heavy burden for taxpayers.
MUI intends to issue a fatwa stating that taxes should serve the welfare of the community rather than impose undue hardship. This religious guidance aims to shape more equitable tax policies and may influence local government decisions.
