Jakarta, 30 November 2025 – Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nur Wahid, said he supports the tax‑fairness fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). He called for immediate implementation, especially for non‑profit educational institutions such as pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).
The MUI fatwa stresses justice, transparency and exemption of taxes on assets used for social‑religious purposes. Hidayat has asked the Ministry of Religious Affairs to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to exempt pesantren from Land and Building Tax (PBB) and from income tax on donations, citing Article 38 of Law No 1/2022 and Article 4(3) of the Income Tax Law.
Adopting the exemptions could lower the fiscal burden on pesantren, align tax policy with their non‑profit status, and promote inter‑ministerial cooperation in fiscal administration.
