Brussels – The European Union has decided to impose a €3 import duty on e‑commerce shipments, including those from Chinese platforms, when the package value is below €150. The measure takes effect on 1 July 2026.
The decision follows a 2024 influx of low‑value parcels worth €4.6 billion, averaging 12 million packages entering the EU each day. Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic said the duty is needed to ensure fair competition in the EU market.
The €3 duty applies per package, not per item; thus three items in one parcel incur only €3, while three separate parcels would attract €9. The tariff is temporary until a permanent solution to the surge is found.
