Indonesia DPR Calls Finance Minister to Discuss MUI Tax Fatwa

The House of Representatives (DPR) will summon Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa on Sunday, 30 November 2025 in Jakarta to discuss the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) tax‑justice fatwa. The hearing, led by Deputy Speaker Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, aims to clarify the ministry’s position on the religious ruling.
The MUI fatwa, adopted at its 11th National Assembly last week, sets out principles such as taxing only individuals whose financial capacity meets the zakat nisab of 85 grams of gold, exempting essential goods, and directing tax revenues toward public welfare with transparent management. The Directorate General of Taxes has created a joint task force with MUI to study the fatwa and evaluate possible regulatory adjustments.
Should the DPR and the finance ministry act on the recommendations, tax legislation may be revised to align with Sharia principles, potentially affecting taxpayers’ obligations and the country’s fiscal framework. This move signals the government’s effort to integrate religious values into fiscal policy while enhancing tax administration transparency.
