Bank Indonesia Plans Rupiah Redenomination, No Rush
November 10, 2025 • Ben Asmadeus

Bank Indonesia (BI) announced a plan to redenominate the rupiah together with the government, parliament and other stakeholders on 10 November 2025 in Jakarta. Redenomination is defined as simplifying the number of digits in currency units without reducing purchasing power.
The redenomination draft law has been placed in the 2025‑2029 national legislative program (Prolegnas) as a government initiative proposed by BI, and is referenced in Presidential Decree 70/2025 on the Ministry of Finance’s 2025‑2029 strategic plan. Authorities argue the measure will improve transaction efficiency and strengthen the rupiah’s credibility.
BI, however, stresses that implementation will not be rushed, taking into account political, economic, social stability and technical readiness, with the draft law expected to be finalized by 2027. The approach aims to preserve the rupiah’s value and support economic growth.
