Bali Governor to Review Tax Rules for Accommodation Platforms
December 4, 2025 • Ben Asmadeus

Bali Governor Wayan Koster said on 3 December 2025 that the provincial government will review tax rules for accommodation rentals offered through online platforms such as Airbnb. The remarks were made at the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) regional meeting.
Koster warned that unlicensed short‑term rentals reduce local tax revenue and create disorder in accommodation management. He suggested adopting a Singapore‑style framework, requiring tourists staying less than three days to use hotels, while stays of three months or more may be in apartments. Regulating platforms like Airbnb, however, also requires approval from the central government.
The province plans to enforce permits on about 2,000 unregistered units starting next year. The action aims to boost tax compliance, level the playing field between licensed hotels and illegal rentals, and increase Bali’s original regional revenue.
