Deputy Governor of Banten, Achmad Dimyati Natakusumah, announced on 26 October 2025 that the provincial government will close all illegal mines operating in Banten. The shutdown will follow a verification of sites that have failed to pay the mineral non‑metal and rock (MBLB) tax.

Natakusumah explained that illegal mines deprive the state of tax revenue, corporate social responsibility contributions, and breach environmental standards. The province can levy an MBLB tax surcharge of 25 % on the tax collected by district or city governments, while those local authorities may impose up to 20 % of the sale price as tax.

Tightened enforcement is expected to curb water pollution, fish deaths, and flood risks, while boosting regional tax receipts. The action underscores Banten’s commitment to enforce mining regulations and protect natural resources.
