Finance Minister Purbaya Vows to Block Steel, Shoe Imports

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, that the government will tighten border controls to stop illegal imports such as steel and shoes. The measure aims to protect the domestic market from unauthorized products.

He explained that illegal goods, including second‑hand clothing sold through unregulated ‘thrifting’ channels, undermine local companies and deter investment. Purbaya added that without protection against illegal imports, the private sector cannot grow optimally, which is essential for reaching the president’s 8 % economic growth target.

By closing illegal entry routes, the government seeks to boost business activity, increase tax revenues, and strengthen entrepreneurs’ confidence. Purbaya reminded that business success must be accompanied by tax compliance.
